We missed this back in August, but wanted to make sure you know. The alignment of the Downtown Riverfront Streetcar from West Sacramento to Sacramento Valley Station has changed, now using N Street and existing light rail routes, shown on the map below. This alignment was passed by the SacRT Board. We aren’t sure if it has yet been approved by the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento, but it seems likely it would be. With a changed alignment, some of the environmental documents will need to be redone, and then submitted again to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). SACOG will probably be ending their sponsorship of the project at their October 20 board meeting, and sponsorship will then shift to SacRT, again, with FTA approval.
The SacRT project page is Sacramento Downtown Riverfront Streetcar Project.
The project is not fully funded. About half will come from federal grants and the City of West Sacramento.
STAR does not have a position on the new alignment, nor has it taken a position on the idea of a streetcar. We have some members supportive and some members opposed. The project has been through so many permutation of funding and alignment and length and frequency and sponsorship that it has been difficult to keep track.
