SacRT route ridership update

Some information about SacRT bus ridership. SacRT does not keep its ridership documents up to date, and stopped including route-specific data in its Quarterly Reports after June 2021, but there is data available that may be of interest to readers.

The 2020-01 table on the left is the last pre-pandemic data, while the table on the right is the latest available from the pandemic. The top two routes are the same at both times, and the bottom three are the same, but the order of other routes varies somewhat. The drop from pre-pandemic ridership to pandemic ridership is steep, but not the same for all routes. It is likely that ridership has increased towards but not to pre-pandemic levels, but data has not been made public.

This data is for weekday ridership. Weekend (Saturday, Sunday) ridership is different, and the order of routes is different, but the overall pattern is similar.

STAR believes that the 45 minute frequency Route 13 Natomas/Arden should be changed to 30 minute, or modified, or dropped completely. Same for 60 minute Route 19 Rio Linda. Bus routes of more than 30 minute frequency simply do not serve riders.

Information on trends in SacRT ridership for bus and light rail will be posted soon.

The route ridership data is available for the period September 2018 through June 2021, the mot recent month publicly available. September 2018 is when the SacRT Forward network redesign was implemented. Routes before that the are different, and even when the route number was maintained, the route itself varies and so the data are not comparable. pdf | Excel .xlsx

The chart below shows the trend over this period of time for weekday ridership. A future post will cover bus, light rail, and demand-response ridership over a longer period of time. Note that the X-axis months are not continuous or evenly spaced. The way in which SacRT offers data in its Quarterly Ridership[ Reposts is not consistent, and not all months are available.
