transit to community colleges

STAR does not have a position on transit service to the community colleges, however, this is likely an issue that we will take up and have a position on in the future. We do have a position that all potential light rail extensions should be studied in unison to determine the best investment for ridership and service. This post is about the existing service and potential service. Note that weekend service is not addressed at all, in part because there are many fewer classes on weekends (though still a need for library access), and because service is low or non-existent. College students! Please comment on your own experiences and needs.

Sacramento City College (SCC): Served by light rail Blue Line at 15 minute intervals during the day, but only 30 minutes after 6:30PM, thereby significantly reducing service for evening classes. Route 62 Freeport also serves the college, but only at 30 minutes, and stops at 9:00PM, before many evening classes let out. Possible improvements: Route 62 largely duplicates light rail service; Route 61 Fruitridge provides 60 minute daytime service from east and west, via a light rail connection, however, this is insufficient.

Cosumnes River College (CRC): Served by light rail Blue Line at 15 minute intervals during the day, but only 30 minutes after 6:30PM, thereby significantly reducing service for evening classes. It is also served by 54 Center Parkway (60 minutes, no night service), 55 Scottsdale (60 minutes, not night service) and 56 Pocket-CRC (30 minutes, night service). e-tran (Elk Grove Transit) provides four local routes to CRC, however, only one, Route 156 is frequent enough to be of any use, with 30 minute intervals and 15 minutes at peak times.

American River College (ARC): Served by Route 1 Greenback at 15 minute intervals days and 30 minute evenings, and Route 82 Howe-65th at 30 minute intervals day and evening. Possible improvements: The college can be directly served by a light rail extension from the current terminus at Watt/I-80. Eventual extension at least to Citrus Heights and possibly to Roseville and/or Folsom would provide access from the east and northeast, which currently requires multiple bus transfers.

Folsom Lake College (FLC): Not served by SacRT at all. Served by Folsom Stage Line Route 10 at 60 minute intervals during the day but not evenings, and Route 20 peak hours only. Possible improvements: The college, as well as the Harris Center on campus which is a major community amenity, should be served with 15 minute service daytime and 60 minute service evenings to 10:00PM. To make bus service here useful, light rail service to Historic Folsom should be increased to 15 minutes and extended to 10:00PM (it currently runs at 30 minutes and ends at 7:00PM). It is unknown whether there is enough demand for weekend service.

Rancho Cordova Center (FLC): Served by light rail Gold Line at Mather Field/Mills station (15 minute) and Route 21 Sunrise (30 minutes) as well as Route 28 (60 minutes), Route 72 (30 minutes), Route 74 (60 minutes), and Route 75 (60 minutes). This is service done right, and LRCCD deserves recognition for placing the center at a transit access location.

Mather Center (ARC): Served by Routes 72 and 75, and a long walk. Possible improvements: Move this center to a transit-accessible location.

McClelland Center (ARC): Served by Route 93 Hillsdale (30 minutes daytime and early evening), Routes 80 Elkhorn and 84 North Highlands (30 minutes daytime and early evening, on the most confusing schedule ever), Route 26 Fulton (30 minutes daytime only) and Route 19 Rio Linda (60 minutes daytime only). Possible improvements: A single understandable route on Watt would provide better service.

Natomas Center (ARC): Served by Route 11 Truxel at 60 minute intervals daytime only. Possible improvements: North Natomas is such a transit desert that it is not clear if there are any solutions.

Elk Grove Center (CRC): Served by e-tran 53, 156, 157, but all with poor schedules and/or long walks. Possible improvements: Light rail extension to Elk Grove or better bus service.

Not addressed here is service to CSU Sacramento, UC Davis, UC Davis Extension, UC Davis Medical Center, and other educational amenities.
