What is Sacramento Transportation Choices?

Sacramento Transportation Choices (STC) is an informal coalition of organizations and individuals supporting a climate- and people-friendly transportation system that emphasizes walking, bicycling and transit over more-of-the-same roadway and highway expansion. STC was a presenter at the recent 350 Sacramento sponsored Community Forum: Leading the Way to Carbon Zero transportation focus group.

Last year, Measure B, a Sacramento County sales tax for transportation, failed. STC was formed to make sure that the next transportation measure is progressive and successful rather than regressive and a failure. STC would like to see a measure that supports both transforming our transportation system and maintaining what we already have (fix-it-first and state-of-good-repair), a measure that moves our county forward to a livable, walkable, economically and environmentally sustainable, low-carbon future.

STC drafted a set of the Transportation Principles to guide thinking and planning for a better ballot measure. Two STC meetings will be scheduled in the weeks to come, the first a listening session to learn the perspectives and priorities of all the interested coalition members, and the second to refine the principles and start developing an action plan.

Until STC becomes more formal and has a web presence, STAR is supporting the coalition by sharing documents and information. A number of STAR’s leaders have been quite involved in the coalition. The coalition is not just about transit, but also about investment in walking and bicycling (active transportation) and transit, and environmentally appropriate land use.
