STAR decision on issues for the coming year

At its February 10 meeting, STAR will be discussing and probably deciding on our top three issues for the coming year. Selection of the top three does not mean that we won’t work on other issues, or that we won’t respond to new issues and changing circumstances as they come up, but most of our energy will be on the top issues. Despite our successes over the last two years, we are a small volunteer organization that must focus to be effective.

We asked our supporters earlier to provide their ideas for consideration. The list is below. You may comment on this list here, but we encourage you to come to the meeting to add ideas or speak up for your priorities. A brief brainstorm will precede a deeper exploration of each one, then prioritization and selection.

  • I think the most important issue is to work toward achieving son-of-a-B (or shall we call it A+?) for 2020. This will involve developing a coalition of progressive transportation advocates in the region to accomplish what LA County did with Measure M – with an increased % for public transit over current Sac measure A. This will also involve lobbying RT Board, STA board, and perhaps advocating for a future regional transit including Roseville, West Sac, and excluding southern and southeastern-most Sac county (leg action needed?). [Ralph Propper]
  • Advocate for a significant expansion of Capitol Corridor Service ridership, including a meaningful increase of passengers who are not in the upper quarter of income earners. [Lynn Franks]
  • Measure B [Lynne Goldsmith]
  • Airport buses or shuttles from N-S-E-downtown [Lynne Goldsmith]
  • Major campaign to improve bus stops and access to bus stops [Lynne Goldsmith]
  • Sacramento Valley Station planning [Dan Allison]
  • SacRT campus and bus facility relocation [Dan Allison]
  • continuation of $20 student passes [Dan Allison]
  • transit pledge for SacRT board and others [Dan Allison]
  • all-door boarding on buses [Dan Allison]
  • SacRT reconsideration of all light rail extensions and expansions [Dan Allison]
