Note: STAR has not taken a position in favor of or against the concept of on-demand transit services such as this. We do feel, however, that all pilot projects should be analyzed for their impact on overall ridership, the socioeconomic benefits of the pilot, and the cost of providing the service. The public should be informed of the outcomes during and at the end of the project so that it can judge whether these services should be cancelled, continued, modified, or expanded.
On Monday, RT will introduce its “SmaRT Ride” microtransit service in Citrus Heights. This is basically curb-to-curb dial-a-ride service (kind of like paratransit) but open to the general public, with the capability of booking in real-time by a smart phone (like Uber or Lyft). RT has actually offered general public dial-a-ride service in Citrus Heights since 2012, under the brand “City Ride.” However that service has always required prior-day booking. The new SmaRT Ride service will allow same-day booking by smart phone and real-time status of your vehicle’s arrival. On the back end, the microtransit software also optimizes the vehicle and operator dispatching, to maximize capacity utilization.
