You are not stuck in traffic, you are traffic.
The original source of this quote seems lost in time (Google doesn’t reveal it), but it is a quote that becomes more relevant as more people in the Sacramento region choose to be traffic rather stepping back and thinking about the implications. We spent billions on expanding lanes and building new roads, but congestion only seems to get worse. Of course it does. That is the logical outcome of making it easier for more people to drive more often and for longer distances. Roadways are not actually a very efficient way of moving people, and building more of them does not change that fact.
See that car in front of you on the road? What if that person were using transit, walking or bicycling to make their trip. That would actually reduce congestion and improve traffic.
As transit advocates, we have a huge job to educate the public that transit is the best solution to congestion, and to work with our walking and bicycling partners to spread the message that walking and bicycling are even better solutions than transit.
