LA’s Measure M

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti

Metro (the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority) released a document entitled “LA County’s Measure M Lessons Learned – How to Pass a Mega Transportation Measure,” which is available on their Measure M page. This document is being used by the Measure B Coalition as a model for Sacramento County in SacTA’s (Sacramento County Transportation Authority) development of a sales tax measure, perhaps for the 2020 ballot. There are certainly differences between the places and the roles that each transportation agency plays, but there is a lot to learn from Metro’s successful (70% yes) permanent one-cent transportation sales tax. The document has also been mentioned by many of the local agencies, including SACOG, SacTA, and SacRT. SacTA has expressed verbal support for the Measure M model, though has not taken any specific action to adopt or follow the model.
