SacRT is soliciting community input on the proposal for a homeless triage center at the Florin Road Light Rail Station. The map is below, followed by the text of the survey if you wish to preview it and think about your answers beforehand. STAR has not taken a position on the issue. The City of Sacramento is proposing a 100-bed temporary homeless triage center on the northwest corner of the park-and ride lot near the Florin light rail station in South Sacramento.
The City would lease about 2 acres of SacRT’s 21-acre site for approximately 30 months for use of a portion of the Florin light rail station park-and-ride lot, which has a capacity of 1,074 spaces, and regularly has 50 to 200 spaces in use.
This is part of a larger effort across the City of Sacramento to help those who are experiencing homelessness with temporary shelter while looking for permanent housing. Priority for shelter use would be to those persons who are within 1-2 miles of the Florin Station site.
To address concerns about the proposed use, and impacts to the Florin Station users and nearby residents and businesses, the City proposes funding the following measures:
- Additional security in the area, including fencing surrounding the triage center, around the light rail station platforms and bus stops, increased security personnel at the station, and lighting and security cameras.
- Cleaning and trash pickup in the area around the shelter, SacRT station area, and along Florin Road.
- Transit passes for all shelter residents, generating revenue and ridership for SacRT.
The temporary homeless triage center will be operational by winter 2019, contingent on SacRT Board and Sacramento City Council approval.
SacRT staff will be reviewing this proposal, and want feedback from the community.
