STAR Accomplishments

On the suggestion of one of our members, we have compiled a list of our accomplishments. We are not suggesting that STAR is solely responsible for these items, only a few, are there are several other transit-supporting organizations in the region, but we are proud of what we have accomplished.

Since the initiation of Sacramento Transit Advocates and Rider at the 350Sacramento Climate Town Hall in November 2015, we have accomplished:

  • Cancellation of major proposed SacRT service cuts in May 2016.
  • Cancellation of half of the proposed transit fare increases in March 2016. The first half was later rescinded due to support from the entire transit community (organizations and individuals).
  • Hosted Sacramento Transportation Choices, the first regional advocacy group for better funding allocations to support a more effective transportation system. Though this initial effort did not ‘take’, the current SacMoves transportation coalition is taking on an expanded role with STAR a core team member.
  • A strong advocacy effort to publicize the weakness of the Measure B Sales Tax on the November 2016 ballot resulted in failure of the measure. Though there was a strong anti-tax component to the measure, those who voted no due to transportation equity concerns probably did so due to STAR.
  • STAR’s participation in SACOG committees has help shift the conversation in transportation funding from ‘all roads, all the time’ to a balanced transportation system. This effort has just begun and will be ongoing.
  • We have initiated a discussion about adding SacRT as an ex-officio member of the SACOG board of directors, which would enhance the voice of SacRT in decision-making, and may eventually lead to full membership.
  • We have met with a number of city and county politicians to increase awareness of transit needs and how transit can address many issues of concern in the community. The entire transit community has also met with various politicians.
  • We formed a partnership with SacTRU, increasing the strength of the transit voice in the region.
  • We developed a detailed plan for a regional transit funding and coordinating agency. Though this has not taken root yet, the concepts have encouraged SACOG to take a more prominent role in transit in the region.
  • We supported the efforts of SacTRU to bring back paper transfers for people not using the app or Connect Card.
  • Our opposition to the Green Line to the Airport as the primary light rail extension has shifted the conversation in the agencies away from the full and incredibly expensive project toward a more limited project that doesn’t not reach the airport in the foreseeable future.
  • We have supported in many venues the idea of more frequent bus service to the airport, in lieu of light rail, and SacRT is now involved in a project to do just that.
  • Our continual advocacy for low-floor, level-boarding light rail cars has encouraged SacRT to make this their top priority for expanded funding.
  • STAR was a strong voice in the SacRT Forward route optimization study for a shift of resources from coverage toward frequency, and this was the model adopted by SacRT. The new network, to be implemented in early September, should provide effective service for a larger number of people, while shifting low-density neighborhoods to the SmaRT Ride on-demand service.
  • STAR has participated in most meetings of the Sacramento Transportation Authority (SacTA) and made formal presentations, and helped shift that agency toward considering better funding criteria and more transit funding.
