SacRT has started the process of modernizing the light rail fleet and service. The first steps were to extend evening service on the Gold Line to Historic Folsom, which is the last station on the line (it formerly ended at 7:00PM, but now extends to 11:30PM on weekdays and Saturday, 9:30PM Sunday), and to increase weekend frequency for the system to 15 minutes during the day. Fifteen minute frequency beyond Sunrise to Folsom must await track improvements.
In email correspondence, SacRT staff listed these four items for the modernization project:
- Replacement of aging high-floor boarding light rail vehicles (LRVs) with accessible low-floor vehicles. We currently have 36 Siemens Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) that are between 28 and 32 years old. We applied to replace all 36 high-floor vehicles with accessible low-floor LRVs. We were awarded 13.
- Addition of LRVs to provide high frequency service between Sunrise Station and Historic Folsom Station. We applied for 10 and were awarded 7.
- Addition of tracking between Sunrise Station and Historic Folsom Station to enable higher frequency service.
- Station improvements to accommodate low-floor LRVs.
If any (or all) of these four items end up on the STAR top issues list, we will obtain and share with you more details about phasing and funding.
