A recent episode of the Talking Headways podcast by Jeff Wood of The Overhead Wire highlighted bus stop transformations in the St. Louis area. It is well worth a listen, and exploring the related materials online, included a feature on the Maplewood transformation.
The important messages of the podcast and effort led by an organization called Citizens for Modern Transit and AARP are:
- It takes time in the community to find out what the community wants for bus stops and stations.
- Really transforming a stop rather than tiny improvements to a number of stops can really generate community enthusiasm and ridership.

SacTRU did a transit stop improvement outreach: Transit Stop Visioning Workshop, October 30, and Civic Thread is currently doing outreach online and in workshops on behalf of SacRT: SacRT bus stop improvement survey. Both of these are focused on how we can improve stops for riders, but it is worth considering what a few large transformative projects could do.
