new platforms at 59th St

SacRT has installed new 8 inch above rail platforms at 59th Street light rail station, and will continue to modify platforms along the Gold Line over the coming year. This is part of the light rail modernization program which will replace steep-step rail cars with low floor rail cars, starting probably in 2024.

As you can see by the photos below, there is still some work do do, presumably to replace the construction cones with railing. The raised platform, which is 8 inches above the top of rail (see SacRT light rail will NOT be level boarding for why this was not the best solution for boarding), are about half the length of the entire platform. It was assumed this half-length is an attempt to maintain boarding for old steep-step cars, but when these cars were at the new platform, it worked fine.

It is unclear whether SacRT intends to install fencing between the tracks to discourage people from trying to cross over and being surprised by the 8 inch step-down over what was formerly a flat surface. Maybe the detectable warning strips (yellow dots or truncated domes) are sufficient.
