The article Here’s How to Ensure Accessible Access at Bus Stops last week on Streetsblog LA addresses the effect of illegal parking at bus stops, as well as blocking of bike lanes. AB 917 allows transit agencies to automatically ticket violations. So far, only AC Transit (east bay) has implemented a program, but others will no doubt follow.
In Sacramento, blocking of bus stops is probably less common than in many cities, but it does occur. We don’t yet have any dedicated bus lanes, but when we do, illegal parking may be an issue. A lot of drivers stop at bus stops, particularly when it is the only open curb space nearby. It is often for “just a second”, but just a second is just as illegal as longer term parking. If the private vehicle is there when the bus comes, it has the same impact on disabled and elderly riders as it would if it were there all the time. It also affects the safety of the bus driver and bus passengers, as it makes maneuvering to find a safe place for boarding more dangerous for everyone.
