STAR is the regional sponsor of the national program Week Without Driving (October 2-8), along with partners Ridership for the Masses RFTM, Sacramento Transit Riders Union SacTRU, Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates SABA, and Civic Thread. We posted back in July when we were just formulating the program.
The partners have created a website for the region, Week Without Driving – Sacramento. We encourage you to check it out!
We are specifically appealing to elected officials who have responsibility for transportation planning and investment, but the program is open to people running for office, agency staff, and anyone who wants to participate. We are also focusing on transit, both because of the leadership of three regional transit advocacy organizations, but also because using transit effectively can be such a challenge for people with disabilities and low-income riders. But we encourage walking and bicycling trips as well.
We are also offering a Ride Along program, where an elected official is paired with a person with disabilities, so they can share the experience and exchange ideas. If you know a person with disability who might be interested in Ride Along, please email their contact info to Dan Allison, sacramentotransitadvocates@gmail.com.
The stories (with photos???) provided by participants will be posted on the website during the week and following.
STAR is proud to be taking a lead on this program.
