A Tuesday email from SacRT about the new low-floor light rail cars included this statement:
“Level Boarding: All riders board from the level platform.”
SacRT made the decision to design the rail cars and platforms with low-floor boarding, which is why deployable ramps are necessary. STAR from the beginning recommended level-boarding, where deployable ramps would not be needed, and people with mobility devices would roll on independently as with every other rider. The rail cars would have been less expensive, and more reliable, without this moving part subject to failure.
For SacRT to now use the term ‘level boarding’ is offensive to the disability community and all riders. we would like SacRT to issue a retraction.
There is another problem surfacing. The “open door” command button seems to need several hard pushes to operate. Just yesterday I saw a rider in a wheelchair who was unable to push the button hard enough to open the door (the door with the ramp). I did not get there in time to help. When I wanted to get off at 59th St I had to whack the button several times to get it to operate the regular door. If this goes on, the driver will have to open all the doors at every stop. I do not know how to call this to RT’s attention.
