SacRT Flex

We wrote about the transition from SacRT SmartRide to the new Flex program, but haven’t posted since the new program went into effect. Flex is considerably different from SmartRide. SmartRide was an attempt to serve all possible riders, but required a subsidy per rider of about $47 which was not sustainable. Flex serves riders who really need point-to-point service, disabled, seniors, and low-income (and children of low-income parents). Though it uses the same ride zones as SmartRide, the purpose is quite different. STAR played a major role in getting SacRT to reject the initial ideal of a ride-hail subsidy for everyone, to rides for those who really need it. Some disabled riders really need the full services of SacRT Go Paratransit, but many do not. Flex offers them, well, more flexibility, to take rides not requiring full service, and to get to destinations that are not on fixed bus routes and light rail, most especially to medical services.

Below is the description from the SacRT February 2025 Next Stop News.
