STAR responses to Hinz 2025-07-28 presentation #6

This in part of a series of posts on the presentation given by Lisa Hinz at the SacRT Board Meeting on 2025-07-28. The audio accompanying the presentation slides is key to understanding them, so we recommend that you also view the meeting recording on YouTube.

Slide 11 (starting 41:40) is about the SacRT Flex program to provide on-demand rides to seniors, disabled, and low-income adults and students, exclusively, using zones established during the prior SmaRT Ride program. STAR supports this program, though recognizing that the disability community has concerns about the wheelchair rear-entry vans used by contractor Via.

Lisa failed to acknowledge that the initial replacement program in August 2024, which was a Uber voucher program, was universally opposed by transit advocates, riders, and the Mobility Advisory Council.

The program implemented in January 2025 was almost identical to the program proposed by STAR (STAR position on voucher program, and other posts). Lisa failed to acknowledge that transit advocacy organizations, in particular STAR, played a key role in rejecting the initial proposal and designing the new Flex program.
