SacRT/Sac bus stop enforcement

SacRT and City of Sacramento are starting a bus stop enforcement program, against people who park in or block bus stops. Bus stop blocking is a serious safety issue for riders, and operators. Either the bus must stop away from the curb, or the stop must be skipped. This is inconvenient, for sure, but also dangerous as it exposes riders boarding and exiting to motor vehicle traffic, and makes it impossible for passengers with mobility devices to use that stop. It should be said that bus stop blocking is a lesser issue in Sacramento than many cities, but it is still a significant problem.

SacRT Bus Stop Enforcement Program provides more information. The program will use cameras and AI software provided by HaydenAI, which has a good reputation with transit agencies. The cameras are mounted on the front of up to 100 buses. Though the enforcement program is in effect, after a pilot program last year, we do not know how many cameras are installed or the schedule for installation. Warnings were issued in the first two months, but citations begin this week, on Tuesday, February 18. The violations photos will be reviewed, and if valid, tickets will be mailed to the vehicle owner.

Though the program is primarily for bus stop enforcement, and bus lane enforcement, though we have few of those in the SacRT service area (on Capitol Avenue – are people aware of others?), it can also be used for bike lane enforcement. Parking in bike lanes and bikeways is much more common than in bus stops.
