SacRT Tap2Ride update

Update 2025-04-03: SacRT staff confirmed that Tap2Ride does not work at the light rail station ticket vending machines (TVMs), and will not work until Phase 2 of the implementation sometime in late 2025. It does work on buses.

See previous posts on CalITP and Tap2Ride (the categories overlap) for more information on the program and SacRT’s offerings.

SacRT now has a webpage dedicated to Tap2Ride, with updated information and a schedule for rollout. Tap2Ride readers have been installed on most buses and paratransit vehicles, but are not yet active, with the program set to start April 1, 2025. SacRT says that it will also be available at light rail stations fare vending machines. In phase 1, transfers between light rail and bus are not included, so paying fare this way will be less flexible than other payment options. Phase 2 will offer transfers, sometime late this year.

SacRT has added Medicare Cardholder to the CalITP Benefits options, joining US Veteran and Older Adult options. SacRT is not at this time offering the low-income benefit, though it is available through the CalITP program. The selection screen is shown below. The benefit, 50% off regular fares, is the same for all of the options, and some riders may qualify for more than one. The ‘Older Adult’ is the simplest to use, if you are already signed up under login.gov, otherwise they are all similar.
