How to build successful transit

STAR has long advocated for a step-wise process of building successful transit, and against a big leap to a high level of transit operations or infrastructure. There is continuing talk of light rail to the airport (Green Line to the Airport), even though the current bus to the airport (SacRT 142 and YoloBus 42A/B) does not have strong ridership. And now planning for BRT or light rail extension into Elk Grove (Blue Line to Elk Grove), which currently has very sparse bus service. This brings STAR back to the basics. SacRT’s Transit Idea Exchange community workshops have largely revealed a strong preference among transit riders, and many other citizens, for better buses, before expensive infrastructure. Credit to Strong Towns for the idea of graphic for a step-wise process for building a strong town (graphic at bottom).

STAR’s graphic is below. What do you think?

  1. The iterative approach by filling in the gaps of usefulness for the community: This is an effective approach, and I feel a great principle to promote.

The graphics is also a great idea to share and promote ideas. Great Job, Dan & Strong Town!
